Lango Cultural Institution mourns King Oyo, says Uganda has lost a young and visionary cultural leader

LIRA CITY, UGANDA | The Lango Cultural Institution has joined the people of Tooro Kingdom and the entire country in mourning the death of His Royal Majesty Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died on August 27, 2026, at the age of 34.
The Tooro Kingdom officially confirmed that King Oyo passed away at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, while receiving medical treatment in the United States.
In an official condolence message, the Paramount Chief of Lango, HRH Eng. Dr. Moses Michael Odongo Okune, Won Nyaci Me Lango, expressed deep sadness and shock over the passing of the Tooro monarch.
“I am deeply saddened and shocked to hear of the passing of Omukama Oyo Kabamba Rukidi IV, King of Tooro. You still had a lot to contribute to Uganda and cultural institutions at large. May your soul rest in eternal peace Amen!” the Lango cultural leader said.
The message, issued on behalf of the Owitong (Clan leaders) of Lango, the Agong (Queen) of Lango and the people of Lango, extended heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family and the people of Tooro.
The Lango Cultural Institution described the late King as a young, brilliant and beloved monarch who still had much to contribute to Tooro Kingdom, Uganda and cultural institutions across the country.
King Oyo ascended the Tooro throne in 1995 at only three years old following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. He subsequently became known internationally as one of the world's youngest reigning monarchs.
During his long reign, which spanned more than three decades, King Oyo became an influential figure in Uganda's cultural landscape. He was associated with initiatives promoting youth empowerment, education, health awareness, environmental conservation and cultural development.
His death has triggered widespread mourning across Uganda, with cultural institutions, political leaders and members of the public paying tribute to his leadership and contribution to the country.
The Tooro Kingdom has assured the public that the continuity of the crown is guaranteed, with the late King leaving behind a Prince who will be formally identified as heir according to Tooro traditions and customs.
As Uganda continues to mourn the young monarch, the Lango Cultural Institution has called for respect and solidarity with the people of Tooro during this difficult period.
