Veteran nollywood actor Olul Jacobs dies at 84

Nigeria | Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84, his family has confirmed.
Jacobs passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, with the announcement made by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, through social media. The family described him as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, and referred to him as “The Lion of Lufodo.” The family also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy as they mourn.
Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs built a career spanning more than five decades across theatre, television and film. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London before establishing himself in British theatre and television and later becoming one of the leading figures in Nigeria’s emerging film industry.
After returning to Nigeria in 1990, he featured in numerous productions and went on to appear in more than 100 Nollywood films. His achievements included the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007, an Industry Merit Award at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. He was also honoured by the Nigerian government with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.
Jacobs and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, also co-founded the Lufodo Group, contributing to film production, distribution and training in the performing arts.
His death has triggered tributes across Nigeria’s entertainment industry and beyond. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described Jacobs as a major figure whose work helped shape Nigeria’s creative industry and inspired generations of actors and filmmakers.
Jacobs’ death also comes after years of false reports claiming that he had died. Previous rumours circulated repeatedly between 2020 and 2024, but were dismissed by his family and colleagues. This time, the announcement has been officially confirmed by his family.
